Split Ends

Knowing a thing is not the same I’ve come to understand as ‘really knowing’ according to others more in the know than me. Personally I’d say that was splitting hairs, a semantic ruse even but there you go. What would I know!

Really knowing a thing is subjective. I think it is. It’s subjective based on our world view, our experiences, our opinions forged in whatever fiery furnace that life has cause to test us in. But ‘really knowing’ to me is simply personal. That an issue isn’t personal for one just means it’s not personal to them but it may be personal to me.

Am I teetering on the line of unreason? Perhaps, but not unreasonably so!What is knowing anyway? Is it a deeply held belief that when push comes to shove we hold it because we must? Because our pride doesn’t want us to lose face in the fact that when tested that our belief might not stack up against rigorous argument?

Is knowing a place, a popular holiday destination for people with wiser thoughts than me? Or is it that knowing is an entry ticket into a fun park of possibilities about how we can live our lives. Lives of colour and hue, dimension and perspective. The possibilities appear endless and exciting.

If knowing a thing on one level is enough for some people I’d have to say it wouldn’t be for me. You know what they say. No?” There’s gold in them tha’ hills,” get out of the way there’s a gold rush on! Knowing is the rush we get from a process of mining, sifting and eventually perhaps finding it. It’s what happens to us along the way that I find more fascinating.

Panning for gold teaches a person patience. It teaches us to look more carefully among the dust and rubble of our lives for what we know is there. Pure gold. Knowing, well, it is what it is. I’ll let you know when I get there, I might be a while so don’t wait up for me.
