Rangitukia woman Kura Wahirangi Kaa has been acknowledged in the 2010 Queen’s Birthday Honours List with a Queen’s Service Order for services to the restoration of historic places. Mrs Kaa (nee Walker) was born and raised at Tutumatai, Mangaoporo Valley in her early years until the family moved to Rangitukia in 1948.

Mrs Kaa, 70, has organised the restoration of Hawke’s Bay and East Coast historic places for many years. During the early 1970s Mrs Kaa rallied the people of Waipawa to restore Tapairu Pa which was then in a dilapidated state and condemned by local council.
