A personal story, a collective triumph: Dyan deNapoli tells the story of the world’s largest volunteer animal rescue, which saved more than 40,000 penguins after an oil spill off the coast of South Africa. How does a job this big get done? Penguin by penguin by penguin.

ABOUT TEDx

TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, ‘ideas worth spreading’. The programme is designed to give communities, organisations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.

ABOUT Dyan de Napoli

“While she was the Senior Penguin Aquarist at the New England Aquarium, Dyan deNapoli hand-raised dozens of penguin chicks, presented daily programmes about penguins to aquarium visitors, and traveled the globe to work with penguin researchers in the field.

Since starting her own educational company, she has authored the new penguin article for Scholastic Publishing’s New Book of Knowledge encyclopedia, and she has served as the onboard penguin expert and guest lecturer on cruise ships visiting the Galapagos Islands and Antarctica. To date, Dyan has taught approximately 250,000 people in the US and abroad about penguins.

The highlight of Dyan’s career was flying to South Africa as part of an international team of penguin experts to help save 40,000 penguins from an oil spill. The rehabilitation effort took three months and 556,000 hours of volunteer labor and, due to the incredible response to the penguins in crisis, 95% of the birds were saved and released back into the wild. This event was historic in its size and success rate, and it represents the largest number of animals within a species ever to be rescued and rehabilitated.”
