In her talk ‘Can I Come With You? Citizen Journalism & Salaam Garage’, Amanda Koster details the birth of her organisation, stresses the importance of ‘deep hanging out’ and profiles some of the projects undertaken so far. Amanda inspires audience members to create their own projects and get them out there using social media and other resources at their disposal.

ABOUT TEDx

TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, ‘ideas worth spreading’. The programme is designed to give communities, organisations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.

ABOUT Amanda Koster

“Amanda Koster is an internationally acclaimed photographer whose commercial and personal work has shown a consistent commitment to telling stories of real people, human rights, cultural diversity and global equality.

She combines her anthropology background with multi-media skills to create content as a means for powerful communication and storytelling.

Her book ‘Can I Come with You?’ is a collection of over a decade of her international social documentary projects, including excerpts from her personal journals. Salaam Garage was founded after she was asked ‘Can I Come With You?’ one too many times when talking about her work.

Amanda decided she needed to create a way for others, citizen journalists (or amateur and professional storytellers) to experience some of the amazing projects she was discovering in developing countries.

She wanted them to share those stories in their own ways. Salaam Garage has led trips to India, Vietnam, Guatemala, and Ethiopia, in each location partnering with NGOs in order to connect directly to the individuals they serve.”
