ABOUT TEDx

TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, ‘ideas worth spreading’. The programme is designed to give communities, organisations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.

ABOUT Phil Yanov

Phil Yanov Phil Yanov is an Award-winning Community Organiser, Presenter, Podcaster, Speaker and Founder. He is the Founder, Creator, Showrunner & Executive Producer of Tech After Five and Networking Over Coffee.

He is a technologist with personality, a natural connector and has built a career out of helping others understand how they can leverage technology at work and play. As a kid, he was shy/introverted and preferred ‘stuff’ i.e. computers and by his own admission too, he liked them more than people.

He grew up on a farm in the middle of nowhere, a 100-odd miles as the crow flies of CMU (Carnegie Mellon University) a global research University known for its world-class, inter-disciplinary programmes in the Arts, Business, Computing, Engineering, Humanities, Policy and Science. He’d do field trips with his friends to CMU and got to see people working at the cutting edge of computer science.

A Light Bulb Moment
He also had a friend whose father worked in the Semiconductor industry (for companies engaged in the design and fabrication of semiconductors and semiconductor devices such as transistors and integrated circuits).

He’d go over to their place and got to look at computers like the Timex Sinclair (the TS1000 was first produced by Timex Sinclair and Sinclair Research in a joint venture. It was launched in July 1982) and The Rockwell AIM-65 computer.

It was the chance to “kind of play around.” He opined, “it felt like a game to me and that was what you know, they always say do for a living …”
