How long does it take to grow the materials we use? Two seemingly disparate ideas: materials and time. One is tangible, the other can’t be touched, and can’t be stopped.

ABOUT TEDx

TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, ‘ideas worth spreading’. The programme is designed to give communities, organisations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.

ABOUT Sam Harrington

“Sam received a dual B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and Product Design and Innovation at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. During internships, he developed high performance circuit breakers at GE Consumer & Industrial, and an improved manufacturing system for cathodic corrosion protection systems at Matcor.

Sam Harrington joined Ecovative Design LLC in 2008 when the company was just a few people in a basement with a wild idea to revolutionise the way materials are made.

With a background in mechanical engineering and design, he’s helped develop the automated EcoCradle packaging manufacturing/growing system, and designed packaging for customers.

As Environmental Director, Sam has conducted Life Cycle Assessments of the production system to inform engineering decisions and minimise Ecovative’s environmental footprint.

Sam is an active member of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition, and several local environmental groups and a two time winner of the Change the World Challenge, and a winner in the international Dyson Eye for Why Design Competition.”
