Tim Noakes has been able to show that the science of hydration is utterly bogus. There is no science to it. It was dreamed up by marketers to sell product. He is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Sports Science Institute of SA, an author, respected academic and A1 rated scientist. His message? You can have the right mindset to learn and achieve.

ABOUT TEDx

TEDx was created in the spirit of TED’s mission, ‘ideas worth spreading’. The programme is designed to give communities, organisations and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at the local level.

ABOUT Prof. Tim Noakes

“Tim Noakes is a Director of UCT/MRC Research Unit for Exercise Science and Sports Medicine, Department of Human Biology, Faculty of Health Science and also the Professor, Discovery Health Chair of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of Cape Town. He has long been acknowledged as an expert in the field of sports and the science of physical exercise.

In the early 1990s Prof. Noakes co-founded the Sports Science Institute of South Africa with former South African rugby player Morne du Plessis. In these new facilities his research unit’s physiological research has produced over 370 scientific articles since 1996, among them a scientific paper on the condition now known as Exercise Associated Hyponatremia (EAH).

In 2005 he undertook a series of pioneering experiments in the Arctic and Antarctic on South African (British-born) swimmer Lewis Gordon Pugh to understand the full range of human capability in extreme cold. Two years later he was the expedition Doctor for Pugh’s one kilometre swim at the Geographic North Pole.

Prof. Noakes has written two landmark books ‘Lore of Running’ and ‘Waterlogged’ the latter taking readers inside the science of athlete hydration for a fascinating look at the human body’s need for water and how it uses the liquids it ingests. In it he chronicles the shaky research that reported findings contrary to results in nearly all of his extensive and since-confirmed studies while offering prescriptive hydration advice to endurance athletes.”
