ABOUT Sandro Galea

sandro_galea“Sandro Galea, MD, MPH, DrPH, is a physician and an epidemiologist. His particular focus on mental health and substance use resulted in seminal publications documenting the consequences of historic mass traumatic events including the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the March 11 2004 train bombings in Madrid and Hurricane Katrina.

Dr Galea pioneered the adoption of a social epidemiologic framework to urban population health questions and has been an important leader in the emerging field of urban health research.

He has been centrally concerned with how social and economic factors are associated with the natural history of post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and drug use. The National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and several Foundations have funded his research.

During Dr. Galea’s tenure as Chair of the Department of Epidemiology, he has launched several new educational initiatives and substantially increased its focus on six core areas: chronic, infectious, injury, life-course, psychiatric/neurological and social epidemiology.”
